The Piper’s Calling You to Join Him

Do you dream of contributing to society in a massive way, yet the details of this vision seem delicately obscured?

Ever hope to create something so meaningful and lasting, millions of people could repeatedly be moved by it?

While watching the Kennedy Center Honors on CBS this week, I was brought to tears by Ann and Nancy Wilson’s tribute to Led Zeppelin. Joined by two boisterous choirs, horn and string sections and a masterful band, they delivered a version of Stairway to Heaven that was beyond riveting.

While the performance would have been enough, what ripped me open even more were the looks of humbled satisfaction from remaining Zeppelin members — Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones.

All I could think of was, “Wonder what it’s like to be honored in such a grand way? Do they realize how truly original their work was? Did they know all along they were meant for this kind of greatness? What an indescribable feeling that must be!”

These gentlemen are free-thinking leaders who care greatly about their work, just like us. They took bold chances and wanted to grow their influence, just like us. They stayed true to their inspiration and tested their confidence, just like us.

Imagine being in that balcony watching those you’ve influenced reflect the significance of your gifts and appreciate you to the max. While this might seem like a fame-fueled, ego-driven pipe dream, pretend like it’s happening.

Now notice… who’s sitting next to you and around you?

  • What are you wearing?
  • For what are you being recognized?
  • How does this change how you view yourself?
  • What does this give you permission to do now?

I’ve re-watched this video nearly 20 times, quietly tearing up at the 3:14 mark, then weeping like a baby at the end. My emotion clearly isn’t just for Robert Plant and the boys. A recognition of sorts happened for me too.

It beckoned something bigger to step forth and gave me a glimpse of how it could look, sound, and feel… fully knowing “my version” might not resemble theirs at all.

A Blessing for 2013: May we hear the calls of our deepest desires. May we find our own unique way with each others’ support. May we always remember, anything is possible!

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow and did you know. Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.” ~ Led Zeppelin

  1. I love the way you help us imagine being there, the recipients of accolades for a lifework so influential and respected. Led Zeppelin was and continues to inspire with their passion and innovation (I’ve about worn out my Robert Plan/Alison Krauss CD). Thank you for writing such a “feeling” piece that blends the incredible music of these musicians into our own dreams, aspirations, and hard work, Erin!

  2. Inspiring, Erin. Thank you so much for writing and sharing. What a powerful reflection to engage in as the new year approaches.

  3. I can see your day coming, Erin. Keep up the good work.

  4. Thank you for this love, I just sent it on to a dear friend in the hospital who could use some good old heart felt spirit driven exquisite rock and roll from her hey day:)
